Bright Idea (2 or 52)

Over this past weekend, I was replacing a burnt-out bulb and got this bright idea.  A light bulb literally went off above my head.  I really had fun with this one.

As you know the new CFL bulbs are taking over, ganging up on the soon to be phased-out incandescent bulbs.  Thus the inspiration of this photo project.

Here's to you Thomas Edison, refiner of the modern-day light bulb.

  1. That is a great shot. Can you tell us how you set it up. Was it done all in camera or is it a composite.

  2. Great shot! The story it represents to me is five extra-terrestrials arrive on earth in prehistoric times. Their ship lands on a caveman and kills him. They are standing around wondering what the creature is and whether it was intelligent. They conclude this place is hopeless and "X" it out on the galactic map.

  3. @Rich: The photo is ~97% original. After the fact, I thought, I should have taken some pictures of the setup but I didn’t (maybe next time). The lights are actually On. This was accomplished by soldering some thin gauge wires to the bulbs and connecting them to a make shift suicide cord. Done with upmost safety in mind of course (I am sure glad my wife wasn’t around). The bulbs were hot glued to my kitchen floor so they would look like they were standing. The wires were carefully and painstakingly aligned behind the bulbs in there blind spots, so they wouldn’t appear in the photo. The broken bulb is actually two broken bulbs. Modern bulbs tend to shatter into tiny pieces and I want the broken bulb to still resemble a bulb so I took the largest pieces of the sacrificed bulbs. I also wanted the GE label to be visible.

    The ~97% was due to some visible wires upon close inspection of the photo that I corrected with some cloning, healing, and darkening with Photoshop Elements.

    I took multiple images at f/11. ISO 100, 19mm focal length. Some under exposed, some properly exposed, and some over since I didn’t want the illuminated bulbs to saturate the photo and was not sure what to expect. Originally I was thinking I may need to do some composite work. I was happy with the results.

    Equipment used: Nikon D3100 w/ Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 lens and tripod.

    @BigOwl: Awesome!

    1. Thanks for the explanation. I'm embarrassed that I totally accepted the fact that the fluorescents were lighted and didn't question how you did it. The care you took to achieve that really paid off. And now that I know there were two incandescents, it is clear that there is more broken glass than one bulb. Great work!
